What Does Mark Hamill Think of Jared Leto’s Joker in Suicide Squad?

SUICIDE SQUAD SYNOPSIS

It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Over the years, there have been numerous performers who have stepped into The Joker‘s shoes on both the big and small screen. The latest actor to take on this iconic character was Oscar winner Jared Leto in this summer’s Suicide Squad, which earned $325.1 million domestically and $745.6 million worldwide from a $175 million budget. Today we have word that another iconic Joker actor, Mark Hamill, recently chimed in regarding Jared Leto’s performance.

As fans of the DC Universe’s animated side well know, Mark Hamill has voiced The Joker several times, including his most recent turn in the R-rated animated hit Batman: The Killing Joke. With Suicide Squad arriving on Digital HD this week, Polylgon caught up with Mark Hamill, who was asked what he thought about Jared Leto’s performance as The Joker in Suicide Squad. Mark Hamill said he “loved” Jared Leto’s performance, and that he hasn’t yet seen a Joker performance that he thought was terrible. Here’s what he had to say below.

“Everyone brings a different spin to the character and you have to look at each script separately. I don’t think there’s a definitive version of the Joker and I don’t think there can be. It’s like Hamlet, really. It’ll be constantly redefined.”

While both Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice put up solid box office numbers, they were both equally derided by many critics and fans alike. While David Ayer wrote and directed Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder served as a producer on Suicide Squad, as he will likely do for all of the DCEU movies. Mark Hamill admitted that fans who don’t like Zack Snyder’s take are “stuck” with it, because he is in charge of the franchise.

“If you don’t approve of Zack Snyder‘s vision then you’re kind of stuck because he’s in the driver’s seat.”

Back in mid-August, Jared Leto revealed in a Q&A session for fans of his rock band 30 Seconds to Mars that he was disappointed with what he had heard about the final cut, since he still hadn’t seen the finished film at that time. This lead to rumors that he might not return for Suicide Squad 2, which has been rumored to start filming in late spring 2017. Suicide Squad writer-director David Ayer is slated to return, with reports claiming that he started writing the script in July, although no cast members have been confirmed yet.
